The Mountain Leader Award is for those who wish to lead groups in the mountains, hills and moorlands of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.
Marle Hall runs training and assessment courses, normally twice a year, and usually during October half term and over the Easter holidays. We provide instruction, food and accommodation; you need to ensure that you have the necessary equipment, paperwork (registered with MLTE and a log book) and the minimum experience requirements to complete the training or assessment course.
The training course runs for six days, with a two day expedition and overnight camp. Modules covered include navigation, rope work, equipment, mountain hazards and emergency procedures, along with many more.
The assessment course lasts 5 days and consists of a 3 day expedition with 2 over night camps, a navigation day and a day assessing security on steep ground and emergency rope work. The syllabus can be obtained by contacting the MTLE directly.
Refresher/Re-assessment Days.
We can also run refresher days covering any aspects of the syllabus for candidates approaching assessment or re-assessment and wishing to brush up on their skills; and individual re-assessments where a candidate has been deferred.
These are by arrangement with the Centre, so please phone (01492-581218) or email Laraine (click here) to arrange a date that suits you.
Current prices are £150 per instructor (ratios of up to 1:4)

This course looks at practical treatments in the outdoors. There are classroom based sessions, but putting it into practice happens in the big outdoors (our 35 acres of grounds actually), come rain, wind or shine. We have trainers who have a wealth of instructing and mountain rescue experience. No technical jargon and fancy bandaging - stuff that works in the wild. You'll need your waterproofs, a karrimat and some drama skills. There are no prerequisites for the course which is recognised by the Mountain Leader Training Boards (MLTE, MLTW, etc), British Canoe Union (BCU, WCA, etc), and Royal Yachting Association (RYA).
The First Aid course covers modules such as:
Environmental injury and rescue.
Stretchers and carries.
How to deal with an emergency far from medical help.
Scenarios. (The helicopter crash is a real test...!)
Use of improvised techniques and an introduction to rescue equipment.
Resuscitation.
Plus many others that you could come across when out with a group.
The course is over 2 days, (16 hours) and runs one weekend in January, watch this space for future dates. Charge covers full board from Sat a.m. to Sun p.m. Accommodation on Fri night is possible at extra cost.
